Ascension Thursday Attack: Members Of Indigenous People Of Biafra (IPOB) Attack Catholic Priest And Faithful For Attending Ascension Thursday Mass

The Parish Priest of St. Jude Catholic Church, Nnewi, Rev. Fr. Festus Eziamaka was among scores of people attacked in the early morning of Thursday in Nnewi by people suspected to be members of Indigenous People Of Biafra (IPOB) who insisted on total compliance of the group’s Sit-at-home order. He was wounded and rushed to the hospital while the windscreens of his car were smashed. Yesterday, it was unsafe for anybody to drive round Nnewi as group of IPOB members and later Movement For the Actualization of Sovereign State Of Biafra (MASSOB) teamed up to force compliance. Besides, many people who attended mass marking the feast of Ascension were not spared. An eye witness told Daily Independent: “The Biafra Day in Nnewi, turned bloody as many people going for morning mass and those returning from night vigil were attacked and wounded at different points by pro-Biafra groups who stormed the town in their thousands as early as 4:30am to ensure total compliance to the sit-at-home order. “Agitators comprising the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) and others were sighted at Ibeto Junction, Nnewi a few minutes to 5:00 am in their hundreds marching towards Owerri Road armed with machetes, sticks and other dangerous weapons”.
